Mistral engineers now supervise AI agents instead of writing code, founder tells French lawmakers
Arthur Mensch told French lawmakers that Mistral's engineers now manage AI agents rather than write code themselves, marking a shift from craft to supervision in the last six months.
Arthur Mensch, co-founder of Mistral AI, told French Parliament on May 16 that engineers at the company no longer write code line-by-line. Instead, they provide specifications and supervise AI agents that generate the code. "You're no longer a craftsman, you're a manager," Mensch said during testimony. "You ask agents to write the code for you. You provide the specifications, you're giving orders. It's a profound shift."
The transition happened within the last six months. Solo developers see productivity gains of 10x to 20x, Mensch noted, but those gains drop sharply in team settings due to organizational bottlenecks. The shift comes with a cost: Mistral spends roughly €10,000 per employee per year on AI consumption, equivalent to about half a GPU's worth of compute per person—around 1 kilowatt of continuous power draw.
