Anthropic's revenue now outpaces OpenAI by 35 percent
Anthropic's annualized revenue has overtaken OpenAI's by at least 35 percent as of Q2 2026, reversing a near-billion-dollar gap from the first quarter.

Anthropic is generating at least 35 percent more annualized revenue than OpenAI as of the second quarter of 2026, according to new estimates from The Information. The reversal marks a sharp turn from Q1, when OpenAI led by nearly a billion dollars. Anthropic's growth rate has accelerated while OpenAI's user acquisition has slowed, widening the gap through the spring.
The shift reflects a broader realignment in the enterprise AI market. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI research leads Dario and Daniela Amodei, has positioned Claude as a safety-focused alternative to GPT-4 and its successors. That positioning has resonated with enterprise buyers wary of reputational risk, particularly in regulated industries where model behavior and auditability matter. OpenAI, meanwhile, has faced public scrutiny over governance changes, leadership turnover, and the pace of its commercial pivots. Both companies are expected to pursue IPOs before the end of the year; if the revenue shift holds, Anthropic's momentum could reshape investor expectations heading into those listings.
